Infrared Light Therapy

Infrared light is a part of the sun’s invisible spectrum of light that has the ability to penetrate the human tissue. Infrared heat therapy uses these far infrared light characteristics to heat the body directly rather than just through the air. Far infrared light increase the body’s core temperature thus resulting in a much deeper, more detoxifying sweat from the cellular level of the skin where many toxins are stored. The biologic end results are improved tissue regeneration, enhanced cellular detoxification, and increased cellular metabolism. Here is a detailed article on molecular mechanisms of infrared light.

At GW CIM we use Biomat, a full–body-length pad that produces infrared light by utilizing naturally obtained amethyst crystals. During a treatment session you will be laying down on the mat with your body very close to the infrared light source.

If after 3-5 infrared light sessions you feel this therapy is effective, we can help you purchase a similar or a smaller size biomat to use at home. Owning a biomat will save you money and provide convenience of using it at your free time, at  home or while traveling. Biomat is a US FDA 510k registered medical device for pain and stress management. The cost of the  BioMat Professional may be covered by your insurance company or a health benefits provider. Currently, insurance companies have covered claims for personal injury protection and workers’ compensation. Flexible health spending accounts have also covered it.

Exposure to far infrared heat for hours can theoretically cause mild burns, but in practice it has not happened.

The following conditions have shown improvement with the  infrared light treatments:

  • Depression
  • Dementia (currently studies under way, weak preliminary evidence)
  • Cancers (currently studies under way, weak preliminary evidence)
  • Inflammation
  • Allergy Symptoms
  • Pain Relief: back, neck, and arthritis pain. Chronic joint pain symptoms seem to respond especially well, according to several randomized trials. Here are a few examples: A full text article presenting findings of a double blind randomized trial showing high effectiveness of LILT for knee osteoarthritic pain; and a recent meta-analysis review showing positive effect on chronic tennis elbow (elbow tendonitis).
  • Weight Loss
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Poor Circulation
  • Skin Purification
  • Wound Healing

Many insurances will cover LILT when it is done in a specific settings such as a part of physical therapy course or a pain clinic treatment. We will provide you with all needed codes to submit to your insurance company. The cost of a single treatment is $50 for 60 min session, and packages are available.
